There are many ways to heat and cool your home including heat pumps. Most Tampa Bay Area homeowners use split systems, which simply means the air conditioner or heat pump is located outside, and the rest of the equipment is located inside. An alternative to an air conditioner is a heat pump, as it can also heat the home, and since the Tampa Bay are not as brutal as Northern winters, a heat pump can be used for both heating and cooling.
Heat Pumps – The Advantages
Most of the time a natural gas furnace is easier on the heating bills, but heat pumps are ideal for a home that doesn’t have gas hooked up. Heat pumps are also good for homes outside of cities in areas with no access to natural gas because propane heating is pretty pricey. A heat pump can be combined with a gas furnace for hybrid heating, which switches between the gas furnace and electric heat pump based on outdoor temps.
The Downside of Heat Pumps
When we have our occasional frigid weather (at least frigid for us local to Tampa Bay!) a heat pump might have to kick into auxiliary heating mode, which is more expensive to operate. This is one reason heat pumps would not be the best choice for heating in a more Northern environment. Also, since a heat pump is running all year long, it will have a short life span than if you were running an air conditioner and furnace combination.
